On Tuesday, 19th January 2010, National Geographic Adventure will announce the winners of their latest contest, Readers’ Choice Adventurer of the Year. This provides NGA readers with the opportunity to vote for the individuals who they deem to have demonstrated a true spirit of adventure through their activities. Unlike NGA’s adventure travel companies rating system, actual people are allowed to cast a vote.

Candidates include the likes of Louie Psihoyos, the film maker behind The Cove – a film examining Japan’s illegal dolphin slaughtering operations; Albert Yu-Min Lin, an explorer searching for the lost tomb of Genghis Khan with Mongolia’s “Forbidden Zone”; John Grundsfeld, a NASA astronaut and ‘the world’s best mechanic’, known for his successful attempt to restore full functionality to the Hubble telescope 350 miles above the surface of the Earth; Dean S. Potter, a rock-climber, adrenaline junkie and base jumper, Potter jumped of the Eiger in Switzerland wearing only a wingsuit, covering 4 miles in just under 3 minutes and Maya Gaberia, the 22 year old Brazilian who surfed a 45-footer at South Africa’s Dungeons.

Voters can choose between 10 adventure nominees and rate them on a scale of 1 to 10. As far as beouthere.com can see there is quite a range of individuals to choose from, so whatever your perception of adventure at least one of the contestants should float your boat and fill the shoes that your dream adventurer would wear.
