typhoon surf tours

It’s well known that Japan is one big snow making machine – skiers and snowboarders flock from all over to experience the powder.

What isn’t so well known is that Japan also dishes up world-class waves. This year, Typhoon Surf Tours are offering adventurous surfers a chance to explore the deep south.

The 10 day guided tours will be held during the typhoon swell months of September and October when the many reef, point, and beach breaks come alive.

“We cater to surfers who want good waves as well as a rich travel experience with plenty of adventure” says Andrew who leads the tours. Novice surfers are also accommodated and can opt for an “Improve Your Surfing Tour” to take their skills to the next level.

So if you feel like getting off the beaten track to surf warm water waves and experience Japan’s culture at a bamboo-shoots level, check out www.typhoonsurftours.com for more info on their 2010 tours.

The event legs combine strategic driving skill with a keen ability in navigation. Race participants range from celebrities to Olympic athletes taking on another challenge. The event is expected to finish on Saturday the 27th March.

Andrew Skurka Route Map

Andrew Skurka is at Buckland, Alaska, which is 90 miles from the start and finish of his latest adventure, and 90 miles further toward his goal. Skurka has started a 4,700 mile route that is expected to take him 7 months through some of the world’s toughest terrain. He has planned a route that has never been attempted which will cross Alaska and the Yukon, six US and two Canadian National Parks. He will cover the distance by skis, foot and a light pack raft with the occasional stop in a pre determined town to re-supply.

Andrew Skurka is no stranger to long expeditions and adventure races. He was in Alaska last year on his ‘Alaska Four Range’ expedition that took two months covering 700 miles of Alaskan wilderness.

He is expected to complete the ‘Alaska – Yukon Expedition’ in October of this year, arriving in Kotzebue where he left off.

Skurkas last Tweet which was today, 18th March read, ‘In Buckland, mi 90. Sun & Mon highs were -15 and -10; warmer Tues but windy. Flat, bleak landscape – kept head down anyway. To Koyuk in AM’

BeOutHere.com wish Skurka the best of luck, and we will keep you up dated on his progress.

Almost 600 entrants for one of the toughest races on Earth

Friday, March 12th, 2010

New South Wales, Australia. Deep in the Blue Mountains national park, the North Face 100 is back. With just under 600 applicants for the race set in May of this year, its promises to be another tough endurance race for competitors from all over the world

A 100km course with a 4,500m elevation gain promises runners an event to rival any of the toughest they may have undertaken. A race record last year saw a local, Andrew Lee, complete the race in just over 10 hours. Runners this year will have to complete stages in the a set time to move forward to the next stage and there for complete the event.

There is a lesser mileage event that clocks up a still impressive 50km, this mid event gives runners a good introduction to competitive distance trail running. There are still places available for this year if you’re feeling brave.

Ski Mountaineering in China: 12 hours up, 3 hours down

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

On a knife edge ridge in Western China; Kasha Rigby, Guila Monega, Ingrid Backstrom and Jimmy Chin scramble along with the intention of reaching the summit then skiing down. They were on Reddomaine, a 20,000-foot peak, one of the many surrounding the monstrous 24,790-foot Gunga Shan in the Minya Konka massif.

The weather had come in on the 4 climbers, but not enough to put them too far behind schedule, they remained resolute in their efforts to continue on up the mountain. With visibility worsening, the team had to huddle in and discuss how they would proceed. With the deadline for turning back getting evermore extended; a few multi pitch belays and Kasha Rigby soloing the last 100 ft of a huge ice bulge saw the team reach the summit of Reddomaine without major incident.

When the team started down the mountain, they were to be the first in history to descend using skis. What had taken them 12 hours to climb, took them 3 hours to descend. When they arrived into base camp the weather had cleared and the moon illuminated their way home.
